Taxis for Getting Around Sint Maarten and St. Martin

Most guests use Silver Line Taxi Service St Maarten at some time to go about the island. Taxi stands are easily located outside the airport’s Arrivals area, and cabs are accessible at Princess Juliana International Airport. Although drivers are required to have government-issued rate sheets based on two-person occupancy, taxis on both sides of the island are not metered, so always know the fare before getting into a cab.

Both Dutch and French taxis serve the whole island,

However rates vary depending on which side of the island the taxi is on. In St. Maarten, there is a two-person minimum charge, with each extra passenger paying $4. There is a complimentary piece of baggage for each traveller, and each extra item costs $1. These are typical island prices: Up to two people and all of their baggage may go from Princess Juliana Airport to Grand Case for $25; from Marigot to Grand Case, it costs $15 to $20; from Princess Juliana Airport to any location in Marigot, it costs $6; and from Princess Juliana Airport to Philipsburg, it costs around $15. Please be aware that prices increase by 25% from 10 p.m. to midnight and by 50% from midnight to 6 a.m.

In St. Martin, taxis are also for two people, but you have to pay around $1 for each bag or valise and $2 for every extra traveller. From 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., these prices are valid; afterwards, they rise by 25% till midnight and by 50% beyond that. Grand Case, Princess Juliana Airport, and La Samanna all provide $15 fares from Marigot to Grand Case, Princess Juliana Airport to Marigot, and La Samanna to Princess Juliana Airport.

Renting a car

Driving is the best way to discover and explore St. Maarten/St. Martin. And hiring a vehicle couldn’t be much easier; there are several car rental companies, with locations all over the island and at airports. With rates beginning at under $30 or 21€ per day, unlimited mileage, and short distances between settlements, it’s also an affordable way to travel the island.

Many visitors hire cars when they land at Princess Juliana International Airport. If you haven’t made a vehicle reservation yet, choose from one of the numerous companies operating kiosks at the airport, including both national and international brands like Budget, Avis, and Hertz. Every rental company parks their cars nearby to get around the law that forbids anybody from picking up a vehicle at the airport (strictly enforced by the taxi drivers’ union in St. Maarten). You will be led by a business shuttle 5 to 10 minutes away to pick up your vehicle when you rent a car from one of the agency kiosks on the Arrivals floor at Princess Juliana airport.

The City Bus

On Silver Line Taxi Service St Maarten, taking the public bus (which is more like a minivan) is a viable form of transportation if you don’t mind some inconvenience and congestion. The bulk of the important locations on both sides of the island are served by buses that operate every day from 5 am to midnight. The busiest route connects Philipsburg, Netherlands, with Marigot, France. The cost of a minibus, which normally travels along a set route and is privately owned and managed, is $2 ($2.50 from 8 p.m. to midnight). On buses, both dollars and euros are accepted.
